The advertised fare is a starting price

Cruise base fares exclude port fees, taxes, gratuities, and most drinks/specialty dining. Two lines quoting the same "per person" fare can differ by hundreds once those are added. Compare the all-in number, and remember the fare is per person, double occupancy — solo travelers often pay a large supplement.

Cabin and timing levers

• Cabin type: interior, oceanview, balcony — you sleep in the dark either way; spend on the ship or the port, not the window, if the budget is tight.
• Booking window: last-minute deals exist when lines need to fill unsold cabins, but they are not something to plan a vacation around. Wave-season promotions early in the year are the more reliable discount.
• Repositioning cruises (one-way between home ports) are routinely the cheapest per night — if the itinerary works for you.
