How to Plan a Budget Trip to New York City

Start with the trip you want: who is coming, how many nights you can stay, and the two or three experiences you most want to make room for. Then price flights, accommodation and daily spending together. A lower airfare is only a saving if the rest of the trip still fits your budget.

This guide combines planning suggestions with official transport and attraction information checked on September 7, 2026. Recheck the linked sources before you travel; the calculator uses the amounts you enter, not live prices.

Jump to your trip budget, or gather your quotes with the steps below.

Compare a whole trip, not just a flight

Choose two or three date combinations you could actually travel. For each, compare round-trip airfare including the bags and seats you need, the full accommodation cost, and the journey from the airport to your lodging. Do not assume a particular weekday will be cheapest; compare the actual quotes for your route and dates.

Include JFK, LaGuardia and Newark when the ground journey works for you. Use the MTA’s airport transport guide to find the relevant routes, then check the fare and service for your arrival and departure times. Put both airport transfers in the calculator’s transit per person for the whole trip field, along with your city travel allowance.

Choose a room around your itinerary

Mark the places you want to visit before comparing accommodation. Consider rooms in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens on their actual total price and journey time; a borough name alone does not tell you which option is cheaper. Check the nearest station, transfers, late-night route and any accessibility needs against the exact address.

Compare the same room occupancy and cancellation terms. Include taxes and mandatory fees. If you need two rooms, add both nightly costs together: the planner’s lodging field is one shared group amount per night. If nightly rates vary, divide the full stay’s accommodation total by the number of nights to get an average. Minor differences can result from rounding that average to cents.

Set a realistic transit allowance

As checked on September 7, 2026, the MTA lists $3 for most subway and local bus riders. You can tap a contactless bank card, phone, wearable or OMNY Card. Eligible subway and local bus rides are capped at $35 within a seven-day period when you use the same card or device. Check the MTA’s fare and payment rules for transfers, children and reduced fares.

Treat that cap as a rule for eligible rides, not an all-transport vacation pass. Work out airport travel separately and check other operators’ fares. The planner does not apply fare caps automatically: enter your own whole-trip allowance, using an average per traveler if your group has different fares.

Make room for the city, and choose paid visits deliberately

Take the Staten Island Ferry. NYC DOT confirms that its service between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island is free. Check the official ferry page and schedule when planning your day. This is a different trip from landing on Liberty Island: the National Park Service says a Statue City Cruises ferry ticket is required to visit Liberty and Ellis Islands. Do not budget the free ferry as transport to those islands.

Leave time for Central Park. Use the Central Park Conservancy’s visitor guide for maps, restrooms and closure alerts. Pick a manageable section and leave room for breaks instead of trying to cross the whole park between other appointments.

Check museum eligibility before counting on a discount. The Met’s pay-what-you-wish admission is for New York State residents and students in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, subject to its verification rules. Other visitors should check the applicable ticket price rather than assume that offer applies. The Met’s official visit page lists admission categories, opening days and gallery closures. Add the tickets you intend to use to your whole-trip activities allowance.

Turn your quotes into a budget

Use food as a daily allowance that includes drinks, tax and tips. We count an arrival and departure day through nights + 1: a three-night trip has four food days. Adjust your daily average if your first or last day is short.

How the budget is calculated

Group total = (airfare × travelers) + (lodging × nights) + (food × travelers × days) + (transit × travelers) + (activities × travelers).

Per person = group total ÷ travelers, rounded to the nearest cent. This splits shared lodging equally. If travelers have different fares or allowances, enter the average per person for each category.

Include taxes, mandatory fees, baggage and tips in your entries. Add airport transfers to transit. Insurance, shopping and an emergency reserve are outside this total; set money aside separately.

Calculated in this browser. Entries are not saved or sent anywhere; refreshing clears them. This is a planning estimate, not a booking quote.

Before you book

Compare your group total with what you are comfortable spending, plus a separate reserve. If the gap is too large, change one thing at a time: the number of nights, a room quote or a paid activity. Keep the experiences you care about most and see which changes actually reduce the total.

Recheck dates, traveler names, cancellation terms and the full checkout price with each provider before paying. Keep your own copy of the final budget; this calculator clears when the page is refreshed.
